On the evening of Friday, November 20, the gate at 7000 Lanier Islands Parkway in Buford opens for the second season since Magical Nights of Lights returned. Cars will roll through miles of animated displays with holiday music playing inside. The show runs every night from 5 to 10 p.m. through January 3, 2027, holidays included.
That season is 45 nights long, and the ticket doesn't change much from one to the next. What changes is the rest of the evening. Some nights come with a food-drive voucher. One brings Santa's arrival. The two biggest holiday events in the cities around The River Club fall on two nights in a row in December. For a household inside the gate, the choice that matters is the date and the hour.
A Second Season on a Longer Route
The resort went five years without a light show before bringing it back last year. In its October 1, 2026 press release, Lanier Islands Resort President Matthew Bowling described the response this way:
"We were floored by the response to last year's Magical Nights of Lights. After five years with no light show, it was clear that our fans missed it."
The same release says the 2026 route adds more than a mile and a half of lights to last year's, with new holiday scenes, animated trees and lights strung over the road. The route ends at Game Changer, the resort's 23,000-square-foot indoor playground, which serves as Holiday Headquarters again this year. It has Clark's Holiday Pop-up Bar and, per the release, a Vendor Village of local makers, artisans and boutiques.
A longer route means more time behind the wheel, which makes the timing questions below more pressing.
The Ticket Covers the Car
Lanier Islands prices Magical Nights of Lights by vehicle, unlike many light shows that charge per person. According to the resort, a standard ticket covers a vehicle with up to 10 passengers and starts at $25. The price varies by vehicle type and day of the week. A vehicle carrying 11 to 20 people needs a $100 shuttle ticket, and anything carrying more than 20 needs a $250 bus ticket.
Per-vehicle pricing rewards a full car. Two neighbors, their kids and a visiting grandparent can all fit under one standard ticket, as long as there are 10 or fewer people in the vehicle. Parking is included once you're inside the resort. Tickets are sold online through the resort's ticketing page or at the gate.
The extras are priced separately. License to Chill Snow Island, run by the resort's partner Margaritaville at Lanier Islands, has snow tubing, ice skating and carnival rides on its own ticket. The resort lists Game Changer's holiday activities as having additional fees too.
A Surcharge at 4, a Rush Until 8:30
Every visit turns on two times of day.
4 p.m. is when the Magical Nights of Lights surcharge takes effect at the resort gate, an hour before the lights come on at 5. Anyone arriving at the resort that afternoon for dinner or Game Changer should expect the surcharge if they drive in after 4.
8:30 p.m. is when the rush typically eases. The resort says its busiest hours run from shortly after sunset until 8:30.
Lanier Islands recommends planning at least two and a half hours, especially on busier nights. That estimate includes the drive, time at Snow Island and a stop at Holiday Headquarters. That gives a household two ways to plan the evening:
- The full evening. Arrive close to opening, plan on two and a half hours or more, and expect the busiest window while you're there. This is the route for families who want the snow, the skating and the indoor playground along with the lights.
- The drive alone. Arrive after 8:30 when you skip Snow Island and Game Changer. The show stays open until 10, which leaves about 90 minutes of the lighter part of the night to see the route at your own pace.
The show stays open in rain, sleet or snow as long as the roads are safe, and the resort posts any closures on its website and social media.
The First Eleven Nights Come With Extras
The ticket stays about the same all season, but the opening stretch adds more.
From November 20 through November 30, Lanier Islands is running Give Back Nights. Bring five cans of food to the front gate and you get a $10 voucher for License to Chill Snow Island and a $10 voucher at Game Changer. The donations go to the Georgia Mountain Food Bank. The press release says the food bank provided 8.5 million meals to 88,000 people across five counties in 2025. It also mentions gifts at the gate for the first 100 cars on select Give Back evenings, which gives an early arrival some value despite the crowd.
That window covers Thanksgiving week and runs one night past it. Santa's Magical Arrival is Friday, November 27, the day after Thanksgiving. The release describes Santa and his elves arriving on the back of a firetruck. Santa then appears at Game Changer at the end of the show on select nights.
With guests in town for Thanksgiving, November 27 puts the most into one evening: the full car that per-vehicle pricing rewards, Santa's arrival, and Give Back vouchers, still in effect that night. A household that brings five cans and arrives for the arrival is using every extra the season offers in one trip.
Two December Nights Already Taken Closer to Home
Lanier is open every night of the season, while the city events near The River Club each happen on a single date. Those dates are what should set the calendar.
- Saturday, November 21. Cumming City Center lights its tree from 6 to 7 p.m. at 423 Canton Road, with a holiday concert before the lighting. That's the second night of Lanier's season, inside the Give Back window.
- Friday, December 4. Johns Creek holds its free Holly Jolly Block Party from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Boardwalk at Town Center. The evening includes Santa, hot cocoa, local choirs and the lighting of the city's 40-foot Christmas tree, according to the City of Johns Creek.
- Saturday, December 5. The City of Duluth holds Deck the Hall downtown from 2 to 7 p.m., with Santa, crafts, music, a holiday market and a snow slide.
The Johns Creek tree lighting takes up 6 to 8 p.m. on December 4, which is the same part of the evening as Lanier's busiest hours. Lanier is still open that night until 10, so a family can see the tree lighting first and drive the route later. Any Monday through Thursday in December also gets you the same lights, on a route that's open every night.
Put together, the season falls into this order:
- Open the season during the Give Back window, November 20 to 30, with five cans in the trunk. Go on November 27 if Santa's arrival is on your list.
- Keep Friday, December 4, and Saturday, December 5, for Johns Creek and Duluth.
- Save a weeknight after 8:30 p.m. for a quieter drive later in December. The show runs through January 3, so the week between Christmas and New Year's is also open, including the holidays themselves.
A Few House Rules Before You Go
- Nobody gets out of the car on the route. The resort doesn't allow guests to leave their vehicles along the roads, so plan photos from the windows. Photography and video are encouraged.
- Dogs can come along for the drive. Pets are welcome inside vehicles, but only certified service animals are allowed at Snow Island or in the restaurants.
- You can arrive by boat. The resort allows arrival by water, though it doesn't provide transportation from the docks to the light show entrance. The courtesy dock is a short walk to Game Changer.
- The route is accessible. The resort describes the driving tour as fully wheelchair accessible, and most other attractions have ADA access.
- Holiday parties include the lights. Groups that book a Lanier Islands event between November 20 and January 3 get free admission to the light show. The resort's sales team is at 678-318-2027.
The holidays fill our calendar the same way they fill yours.
